An Australian fisherman has found the head of a mako shark, suspected to have been attacked by a larger shark.
Fisherman Trapman Bermagui discovered the shark’s head in Bermagui, a town in the state of New South Wales, Australia, on the morning of March 29. He shared a photo of the 100kg head on his personal Facebook page in the hope of finding the culprit who ate half of its body.
“This is all that is left of this massive mako shark. Unfortunately we didn’t see anything eat it but it must have been impressive. We were hoping to catch a small shark but instead pulled out a large shark that had been bitten by a larger shark,” Trapman said.
The mako shark can grow up to 3.8 metres long and weigh 570 kg. It is the fastest shark species, swimming at a speed of 74 km/h. Trapman believes the animal that ate the mako shark must be extremely large.
The discovery raises suspicions about the return of the megalodon, an ancient shark that ruled the world’s oceans 3.6 million years ago. Megalodon is believed to be the largest fish on the planet.
A 20-foot-long great white shark could also be the culprit. Many commentators have suggested that at least two great whites were involved in the attack. Some social media users have speculated that the culprit could be a tiger shark or a ki.ller whale.
